BMW M2 by AC Schnitzer brings 420hp to the Party

Never ones to shy away from breathing on BMW’s M-cars, AC Schnitzer have now turned their capable hands to the M2. With more power, sharper dynamics and less weight to lug around, the BMW M2 by AC Schnitzer is designed to demonstrate what the tuners from Aachen can do with Munich’s latest round of performance cars.

The major statistic is the hike in power. AC Schnitzer’s M2 has 50hp more than the standard car, taking it from 370hp to 420hp and torque is up from 343 ft lb to a whopping 420 ft lb. This is achieved by a revised engine management, more efficient charge cooler and more efficient breathing through a new exhaust. Despite the significant power increase, however, AC Schnitzer is keen to point out that its modifications have been chosen with longevity and robustness in mind – so much so that the modifications come with a two year warranty.

Speaking of the exhaust, the Aachen’s finest have modified the silencer and played with the valve control system for a sonorous soundtrack. Gases move more freely, aiding the engine in delivering its maximum potential, but the look of the car is also enhanced. Tail pipe trims are offered in chromed “Sport” and black “Sport Black” trim, and can be chosen by customers depending on their preferences. A variety of new, forged, 19 and 20 inch wheels have also been developed to offer an array of design styles to suit the customer.

Of course the elevated performance comes with enhancements to the already renowned handling of the BMW M2. New, in-house designed RS coilovers are complemented by fully adjustable (for height, compression and rebound) dampers which lower the overall ride height by between 30mm and 40mm. AC Schnitzer honed the setup with the aid of touring car driver, Manfred Wollgarten, and reckons that the dynamic improvements make the car more competent in both track and fast road situations, without compromising ride comfort.

Whilst the M2 isn’t a heavy-weight, AC Schnitzer has addressed the car’s mass with a view to reducing it in key areas. Two-piece carbon front wings, a carbon rear wing and a carbon diffuser are more than just decoration, offering genuine aerodynamic improvements. These improvements are further enhanced with a new front splitter and rear roof spoiler which provide better stability at speed.

Inside, the M2 has been treated to a few select design changes. AC Schnitzer has created new aluminium pedals and footrest, an aluminium cover for the BMW i-Drive controller, the option of a silver or black handbrake and velour floor mats.

The overall effect of AC Schnitzer’s alterations is striking, to say the least, and certainly adds a bit more of a wild streak to the M2. Thankfully, whilst owners could go all-out and buy the entire package, they can also pick and choose elements of the modifications to suit their needs. And the price for all this?
