2002 Hommage Revealed
BMW chose the Concorso d’Eleganza at the Villa d’Este to reveal its latest Hommage car, this time to celebrate 50 years of the 2002. The homage to the 2002 is based on the latest M2 Coupé and thus has very similar proportions although it looks even more muscular thanks to enlarged wheel arches and a lower front spoiler assembly which makes it appear as if its really hugging the road.
While BMW is doffing its cap to the 2002’s 50th anniversary the Hommage has been designed to celebrate in particular the 2002 Turbo – Europe’s first turbocharged production car. “Exactly 50 years ago, the ‘02 range kick-started an era of success for BMW. This compact coupé is one of the vehicles which made the brand what it is today,” explained Adrian van Hooydonk, Senior Vice President BMW Group Design at the unveiling of the Hommage. “The 2002 sat at the top of the range and was the first series-produced car anywhere in Europe to come with turbo technology. That set the seal on the coupe as a genuine sports car. At the same time, the 2002 turbo was at the technological vanguard of engine development at BMW. The 2002 Hommage is our way of raising a glass to all these achievements.”
Inspired by the signature chrome strip that ringed the ‘02 in its day, a horizontal carbon band wraps itself around the shoulderline of the 2002 Hommage, splitting the body into two sections. The roof, bonnet and boot lid has matt paintwork to prevent reflection of the sun’s rays – in a reference to racing cars of yore – and the body’s lines here are minimalist, clearly drawn and flowing in nature. The lower section creates a definite contrast, with its high-gloss paintwork and bolder, sculptural surfaces, and distinctive lines that give the flanks a contemporary flavour. The Space Race Metal paintwork drapes itself over the 2002 Hommage like liquid metal and in both its matt and gloss form, the light metallic blue finish changes in appearance from a brightly fluorescent blue to grey, depending on how the light catches the car.
The Hommage has wider wheelarches – partly thanks to being based on the M2 with its wide M4-derived axles – but also to recall the homologated version of the 2002 turbo, which needed broad extensions bolted onto its body to accommodate a significantly wider track. The arches house 20-inch light-alloy wheels in a bi-colour design and hidden behind the rims are carbon ceramic brakes and gold-coloured brake callipers bearing the M logo.
Sadly, like the rest of the Hommage cars, there are no plans for a production version of the 2002.
